one of these things is not like the others...

Somewhere in the front of March's is a list of chemical abbreviations. Most of them make sense. I found an exception, though:

Is it used for certain reactions that only work in New York? I have no idea.

Sure. Don't you know that the secret ingredient in many reactions is loction: left in the fumehood and up ten cm. Oh and certain metathesises work best in New York ... on a full moon.

Coincidently I've written something also on abbreviations.

BTW, LTNS (lone time no see)!

blogspot.com is blocked by Chinese government for ages. Now I'm using proxynow.com.

It is the secret ingredient of Sezen-Sames reactions.

It's from the dedication:

"For NY--I loved you long before Flover Flav, baby. Come back to me; let's rediscover our 'chemistry'."

:-)

I applaud March for being so thorough...why list only chemical abbreviations?

NY, since everything revolves around it, is important in certain chiral reactions. Or so I hear. I've never actually seen a stereocenter, but there are ugly rumors that they exist.

funny story david: last week I read a bunch of papers with your name on them. I almost did a seminar on your work. Almost.

I'm glad somebody reads them. I doubt they did you any serious harm, unless you banged your head on the desk as you dozed off. You probably kept your karma account positive by not subjecting your fellow grad students to them, though.

I think good stuff will come out of my old group. Bossman has a lot of talent, and somehow even gets blood out of turnips like me, so I try to keep up with what they are doing.
