bright shiny distraction

The average CBC reader probably has something more than I do in terms of attention span, but I've been getting bored with writing lit posts.[1] I haven't had much occasion to take pictures this summer, but I was mesmerized by the iridescent colors on these SEM samples. I could tell you what they are, but...trust me, they're not really that exciting.[2] Enjoy!

[1] The average squirrel probably has more of an attention span than I do, but that's irrelevant...

[2] By which I mean they are 100% inorganic. Ew. No carbon, no fun...

Why demean the poor squirrel! I have seen them munching pretty intensely with concentration on acorns and suchlike :P

oh for fuck's sake, it's a fluff post! :P would you rather I had posted a kitten instead?
Most of what you see is aluminum, covered by a thin film of CdSe, covered by a very thin layer of gold. They weren't remotely colorful until I took them out of the sputterer.
