God Save the Queen('s eyes)

Hilarious picture in this week's C&EN:

My grandma has sunglasses just like those.

Pic is from some article (subscription only) about Oxford University and money or something. I didn't read it. I didn't need to. That is a picture of Queen Elizabeth II at the opening of one of Oxford's new chem labs in 2004. Not shown: Her Majesty donning a labcoat and running a Ley oxidation (made in England, of course) in 95% yield.

Britain does, however, have a history of electing chemists to high office. (well, one. but she's kind of a big deal.)

They seem to have a tradition of asking the Queen to open chemistry departments. I believe that was the case with the chemistry building at Imperial College too.

Speaking of world leaders and chemists... how about Angela Merkel? She trained as a quantum chemist in Germany. Pretty awesome.

The Queen of our fair land also opened the GSK labs at Stevenage.

God save you your majesty.

*sniff*

The other guys in the photo all appear to be business/political types, but look in he background. That guy in the red glasses/labcoat is clearly a chemist, and he seems to be about to cry. Maybe the queen told him to column his stuff again, or that she won't let him graduate till he gets that coupling going?

Running long columns sometimes makes me want to cry too.
(Fortunately, we usually just recrystallize.)

It was definitely a black lab coat affair. The fella in white is going nowhere. Why didn't somebody borrow a Queen's pair of safety glasses from Dame Edna?

Bush the Lesser is finally getting shut of Runnymede after 792 years of oppression, and here is this elderly Germanic broad pushing it right back in his face courtesy of the ACS. Tch, tch.
