...ouch.

I was peacefully flipping through C&EN when this structure on pages 80-81 almost made my head explode.

I am SO glad I'm not a carbohydrate chemist.
Synthesis by Dr. Fraser-Reid's group, Natural Products & Glycotechnology Research Institute, um, wow.

Picture will play havoc with a proxy. Best to save it to your Blogger account or flickr or something.

want your head to REALLY asplode? Think of what the proton NMR spectrum of that must look like. My guess would be "holy shit."

I don't think the proton NMR of this monstrosity will be that bad. The structure units are quite repetitive, so I guess there will be around 10 broad peaky-like things. Some more intense than others... You could probably even get some information out of it (like, compare the integrated intensity of all aromatic range peaks to the intensity of the rest of them.)

Wow!!! I wonder if MAS 1H is a must for that size a structure...

Ome on, the Stuff isn't that bad. It doesn't even contain Aminosugars. Now they are a challenge...
